Electrician in Claygate

NICEIC-approved electricians in Claygate (KT10) – the village centre around The Green and the High Street, the Foley Estate, and the roads out towards Claygate Common and Telegraph Hill. Claygate has more detached houses than any other area we cover, and with them come driveway chargers, garden rooms and consumer units stretched by decades of extensions. We design for the whole load, not just the next appliance, and price it in writing.

Claygate’s detached houses and what they ask of a supply

In Claygate ward 44.7% of homes are detached – the highest share of anywhere on our patch – with 30.8% semi-detached, 11.4% terraced and just 10.0% flats (Census 2021). That shapes the work we’re called for here more than anything else.

Detached houses get extended. A rear kitchen, then a loft, then a side return, often decades apart and by different builders. Each one usually ends with a new circuit squeezed onto the original board. By the time someone wants an EV charger or a garden room, the consumer unit can be full, circuits doubled up on single ways, and some older parts of the house still without RCD protection.

So our first visit in Claygate is usually a survey of the whole installation, not just the spot where the new thing will go. We look at:

  • The board – is it full, and does every circuit have RCD protection?
  • The supply – will the main fuse and incoming cable cope with a charger, heat pump or electric heating in an outbuilding running at the same time as the house?
  • The extensions – were they wired to a standard you’d accept today, and are they certified?

Sometimes the answer is a new consumer unit with room to grow. Sometimes it’s load management on the charger, or a request to UK Power Networks for more capacity. Occasionally it’s “your board is fine, go ahead”. We’ll tell you which.

Powering garden rooms and outbuildings: advice from Claygate electricians

Large plots mean plenty of buildings at the far end of the garden: home offices, gyms, studios, garages, sauna cabins. Every one needs a supply that’s planned properly:

  • Armoured cable, sized for the run and the load, buried at the right depth or fixed securely along a boundary.
  • A sub-board in the outbuilding with its own protection, so a fault out there doesn’t trip the house.
  • Voltage drop checked on long runs – a 40-metre garden changes the cable size.
  • Earthing assessed for the building, which isn’t always as simple as extending the house’s earth.

Heaters, saunas and EV chargers in outbuildings all add up quickly. We’ll design the supply for what you’re likely to add next as well as what’s going in now.

EV charging: on the drive or across the pavement

With so many detached houses, a drive is common here, and that makes a home charger fairly straightforward. We fit OZEV-approved chargers, check that the supply can carry the extra load and handle the UK Power Networks notification.

If you don’t have off-street parking, the county has a new option. Since 18 June 2026, Surrey County Council has offered Kerbo Charge cross-pavement cable gullies for £499 to residents without off-street parking – a job that would normally cost over £1,000. The gully sits in the footway and carries your charging cable from the house to the car safely; leaving a loose cable across the pavement isn’t permitted. Connected Kerb holds the county-wide on-street charging contract, which Surrey describes as the largest on-street chargepoint contract in the UK. If the council approves a gully for your house, we can install the home charger it serves.

Claygate Village and the Foley Estate

Claygate has two conservation areas:

  • Claygate Village (designated 28 November 1990) – The Green with its 1911 trough and 1893 fountain, parts of Elm Road and the High Street, Victorian shopfronts, Sims and Sydney Cottages from about 1880, and a separate group on Church Road by the Recreation Ground.
  • Claygate Foley Estate (designated 23 November 1994) – around 7.3 hectares, including the Fitzalan Road housing developed by Lord Foley’s brother.

You may hear people refer to “Ruxley” as a conservation area; it isn’t. Ruxley Towers, built around 1870 for Lord Foley, is a Grade II listed tower. Holy Trinity Church on Church Road (1840) is also Grade II.

The parish council has nominated the brick pavements on Dalmore Avenue, Meadow Road, Foley Road and Torrington Road as local heritage. If you live on one of those roads and need cable run outside – to a garage, a gate, or a charger on the boundary – we’ll keep it on your side of the property line and away from the pavement surface wherever possible. Elmbridge has no Article 4 directions in Claygate, but anything on the front of a house in a conservation area may still need consent.

Electrician in Claygate – FAQs

Often, yes – but not always. If the board has no spare ways or lacks RCD protection, an upgrade is usually the cleanest route. We’ll assess it during the survey.

Yes. Long runs need larger armoured cable and a voltage drop check, and the building needs its own sub-board. We’ll design it for the heaviest use you expect.

Possibly. Surrey’s £499 Kerbo Charge gully lets a cable cross the pavement safely if your property is approved. Without one, trailing a cable is not permitted.

No. Claygate’s conservation areas are Claygate Village and Claygate Foley Estate. Ruxley Towers is a Grade II listed building, which has its own consent rules.

We aim to keep all cable on your side of the boundary. If a route would touch the pavement, we’ll tell you first and suggest alternatives.
