NICEIC-approved electricians in Hampton, Hampton Hill and Nurserylands (TW12). Few postcodes mix building eras like this one: a riverside village around St Mary’s and Thames Street, Victorian streets by the station, interwar semis north of the railway, a 1980s estate on old nursery land – and, on the water, floating homes and islands. Each asks something different of an electrician, and we’ll explain which applies to yours before quoting.

Living on the river: Tagg’s Island and Thames Street
Tagg’s Island is home to 62 floating homes and roughly 100 residents, and the 2021 Census recorded 50 households in Hampton ward living in a “caravan or other mobile or temporary structure”. Electrical work afloat isn’t the same as work in a brick house. The supply comes from the bank, the home moves with the river, and damp and condensation are constant.
In practice that means connections that tolerate movement, enclosures rated for wet locations, RCD protection on every circuit and regular inspection rather than “fit and forget”. If you live afloat and aren’t sure when your installation was last tested, an inspection is the place to start – we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s work we can take on or whether you need a marine specialist.
Back on dry land, the older houses along Thames Street and around St Mary’s sit close to the water too. When we rewire there, we think about where the board and ground-floor sockets go with the river in mind.
Platt’s Eyot: a reminder about fire
Platt’s Eyot was home to Thornycroft’s Hampton Launch Works from 1904, and is now a conservation area reached by a 1941 Royal Engineers suspension bridge. On 3 May 2021 a fire largely destroyed its listed boat sheds, which dated from around 1916.
We won’t comment on what happened there. But anywhere reached by a single footbridge, early warning matters more than usual. Interlinked smoke and heat detection, workshop installations that are inspected on schedule, and wiring sized for the machinery actually being used are all things we can test, install and certify.
Four building eras, four jobs for a Hampton electrician
Hampton ward is mixed: 30.0% semi-detached, 23.2% terraced, 19.9% flats and 17.9% detached (Census 2021). Behind those numbers sit very different installations.
The old village
Around St Mary’s and Thames Street is the oldest part of Hampton – The Feathers, from around 1540, is thought to be its oldest building. Older houses here have been adapted for electricity long after they were built, so cables often run where they could rather than where they should. Surveys take longer, and we plan routes carefully to protect original fabric.
Victorian houses by the station
Hampton station opened in 1864 on the Shepperton branch, and from the 1880s houses were built nearby for Metropolitan Water Board staff – the Hampton Water Treatment Works is still a neighbour. Many have been rewired once, often decades ago, and are ready for another look.
Interwar suburbs and Nurserylands
North of the railway, the interwar streets usually have simpler layouts and easier cable routes, but often still carry an old fuse board. Nurserylands, built from 1980 on former nurseries, is younger again. Its wiring is usually serviceable, but boards from that period often lack the RCD protection a modern installation expects – a consumer unit upgrade is a common job there.
Hampton Village, Hampton Hill and their conservation areas
Hampton’s conservation areas include Hampton Village, Hampton Court Green, Hampton Court Park, Hanworth Road, Platt’s Eyot and Bushy Park. In Hampton Hill there are three more: High Street Hampton Hill, Mays Road and St James Avenue.
Article 4 directions apply within the Hampton Village area on Oldfield Road, Rosehill, Station Road, Avenue Road and Beards Hill, and in Hampton Hill on the High Street and Mays Road. Depending on its wording, a direction may mean you need permission before altering doors or windows, rendering or painting brick, taking down a chimney or paving the front garden. Garrick’s Shakespeare Temple on Hampton Court Road is Grade I listed.
For you, that mostly affects what goes on the front of the house – meter boxes, outside lights, charge points – and whether a front garden can become a drive. We check the rules for your road before we put a price on paper.

Electrical services we’re asked for most in Hampton
- Consumer unit upgrades – Modern RCBO boards for Nurserylands and interwar homes still running older boards.
- EICRs – For landlords, buyers and anyone living afloat who wants to know where they stand.
- House rewires – Careful rewires in the old village and the Victorian streets by the station.
- Emergency electrician – Loss of power, tripping that won’t reset, and water where it shouldn’t be.
- Garden lighting – Outdoor circuits for gardens near the river and Bushy Park.
Across TW12 we also cover fault finding, LED upgrades, EV chargers, home saunas and commercial premises.
Charging and letting in Hampton
Drivers without a drive can apply to Richmond Council for a lamp-column point (ubitricity and char.gy supply the 5kW units; TotalEnergies runs faster bays). There’s a backlog – several hundred requests ahead of the next 2026/27 phase. The Highways Act 1980 rules out trailing a cable over the footway, though the council fits paid cable channels where a property suits. With off-street parking, we put in an OZEV-approved charger and look after the network operator paperwork.
Landlords must have each private tenancy inspected and an EICR issued within every five-year period, and bigger shared homes fall under mandatory HMO licensing. We test, explain each code and quote remedial work as a fixed sum.

Electrician in Hampton – FAQs
We can inspect and advise, and we’ll be upfront if the installation needs a marine specialist rather than a domestic electrician. Either way, regular testing matters more afloat than on land.
Internal work is generally unaffected. Anything on the front of the house, or plans to pave the front garden for parking, may be restricted. We’ll check the direction that covers your road.
Usually not. Wiring from that era is often still sound, but the original board may lack full RCD protection. An EICR will show whether a consumer unit upgrade is enough.
It can be, if the supply is sized for the equipment, protected properly and tested regularly. We’ll assess the existing installation first and tell you plainly what it would take.
Not with a cable across the pavement. Ask Richmond Council for a lamp-column charger or, if your house is suitable, a paid footway cable channel that lets you use a home charger.
Yes – NICEIC Approved Contractor and Domestic Installer, assessed annually, with certificates accepted by insurers, lenders, letting agents and building control.
No. Quotes are free and written, and the price we give is the price you pay unless the scope changes.
