NICEIC-approved electricians in Teddington and Hampton Wick (TW11). Most of the town went up within a few decades of the railway arriving, so the terraces off the High Street and Broad Street, the villas towards Bushy Park and the riverside streets around Broom Road have one thing in common: wiring that has been added to, cut into and extended many times since. Rewires, EICRs, consumer units, EV charging and call-outs – all priced in writing first.

What Teddington electricians find in a railway-era house
Trains reached Teddington in 1863. Two years earlier the parish had 1,183 residents; by 1901 it had 14,037. That twelvefold jump explains the place: street after street of Victorian and Edwardian houses, all now past their hundredth birthday.
None were designed around electricity. Power came later, a room at a time, and each owner since has added something – a kitchen circuit, a loft conversion fed from the nearest cable. Opening up a Teddington house, we expect two or three generations of cable in one junction box, so we test before assuming anything.
A staged rewire, one floor at a time while you stay in, is often the sensible answer – but we start with an inspection, and if the installation is in decent order we’ll say so.
Flats in Hampton Wick and South Teddington
The town centre isn’t all terraces. In Teddington ward, the 2021 Census counts purpose-built flats at 33.5% of homes, against 26.4% terraced, 21.1% semi-detached, 8.2% converted flats and only 7.2% detached. Head south and the balance tips further: in Hampton Wick & South Teddington ward, purpose-built flats make up 43.1%.
Add the homes on the old Teddington Studios site – opened in 1958, redeveloped as housing in 2016 – and much of our work here comes with a lease attached. In newer blocks, anything beyond the flat’s own wiring (a hob circuit, moving the consumer unit) can need the managing agent’s say-so. In older blocks and conversions, landlord supplies for stair lighting, door entry and fire alarms are often knotted together with individual flats, and untangling them comes first.
Letting a flat? The 2020 private rented sector regulations mean a fresh EICR for each tenancy at intervals of no more than five years, and bigger shared houses come under Richmond’s mandatory HMO licensing. We explain each code in plain English and fix the price of any remedial work.
Teddington’s conservation areas and Article 4 roads
Few places in the borough have as many conservation areas packed into one postcode: Park Road, The Grove, Teddington Lock, Broom Water, High Street Teddington, Normansfield, Bushy Park and Hampton Wick, plus newer designations at Royal Road, Wick Road, Broad Street, Bushy Park Gardens, King Edwards Grove and Church Road Gardens. Royal Road alone takes in Oxford, Connaught, Anlaby, Windsor, Royal, Prince’s and King’s Roads.
On some roads an Article 4 direction removes rights you would normally have over doors, windows, rendering brickwork or paving over a front garden. They cover Clarence Road; Cambridge Road, Grove Terrace and The Grove; Kingston Road, Twickenham Road and Broom Road; and, in Hampton Wick, the High Street, Lower Teddington Road and Park Road.
Electrically, two things follow. Anything fixed to a front elevation – a relocated meter box, an outside light, a wall-mounted charger – may need consent, and an Article 4 road may rule out turning the front garden into a drive. Normansfield Hospital on Kingston Road is Grade II* listed. We raise all of this at survey stage.

Electrical services we’re asked for most in Teddington
- House rewires – Floor-by-floor rewires for Victorian and Edwardian houses, with the old mix of cables stripped back to one standard.
- EICRs – Landlord reports for flats in Hampton Wick and South Teddington, and pre-purchase checks on century-old houses.
- Consumer unit upgrades – RCBO boards so a fault on one circuit no longer takes down the whole house.
- EV charger installation – Home chargers where there’s a drive, and straight advice when a footway channel or lamp column is the better bet.
- Fault finding – Tracking down nuisance tripping where circuits from different decades share a junction.
Elsewhere in TW11 we handle emergency call-outs, LED lighting, garden lighting, sauna installs and commercial electrical work.
Near the lock: riverside homes
Teddington Lock is the upstream limit of the tidal Thames, and the River Thames Scheme covers the river from Datchet down to Teddington. If you live close to the water around Broom Road or the lock and you’re planning a rewire, think about the ground floor while the walls are open. A higher consumer unit, sockets lifted off the floor and downstairs circuits on their own RCBOs mean one wet room doesn’t cut power to everything.
If water has already got into sockets or the board, leave the RCD alone and call us to isolate and test.
Charging an EV when you park on the road
Plenty of Teddington terraces have nowhere to park off the street. Richmond Council’s answer is lamp-column charging at 5kW, from ubitricity and char.gy, plus faster bays operated by TotalEnergies. Residents without a drive can ask for a lamp-column point, but expect a wait: the next phase is planned for 2026/27 and several hundred requests are already in the queue.
Running a cable over the pavement from your hallway isn’t allowed under the Highways Act 1980, but where a house suits it the council will put in a paid footway cable channel – which can make a home charger workable after all. With a drive it’s simpler: a supply check, an OZEV-approved unit on the wall, and we tell UK Power Networks.
Where we work around Teddington
The High Street and Broad Street, Teddington station, the edges of Bushy Park and the National Physical Laboratory, St Mary’s church and the Landmark Arts Centre, Kingston Road and Normansfield, Broom Road and the lock footbridges over to Ham, the RNLI station, and on through Hampton Wick. Everywhere else is listed on our coverage page.
Building control: Richmond Council Building Control Team, Civic Centre, York Street, Twickenham. Because we’re NICEIC-registered, notifiable jobs are self-certified – the council doesn’t need to send an inspector, and a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate is posted to you once the work is registered.
Nearby areas we cover
Over the river or a short drive away, we also work in Hampton, Kingston upon Thames and East Molesey.

Electrician in Teddington – FAQs
No. Plenty have been rewired properly at some point. An EICR tells us what’s actually there, and we’ll only recommend a rewire if the results justify one.
Royal Road is one of Teddington’s newer conservation areas, so a charger on the front elevation may need consent. A side or rear position is usually simpler. We’ll check before quoting and tell you what’s realistic.
If your house is suitable, ask the council about a paid footway cable channel. We can fit the charger once it’s approved.
Usually only from your freeholder or managing agent, and only where the work touches the building’s shared supply, risers or common parts. Check your lease; we can speak to the agent for you.
A house shared by five or more people who aren’t one household will probably need a mandatory HMO licence from Richmond Council. Any private let, of any size, needs an EICR no older than five years.
Yes – NICEIC Approved Contractor and Domestic Installer, assessed annually, with certificates accepted by insurers, lenders, letting agents and building control.
No. Quotes are free and written, and the price we give is the price you pay unless the scope changes.
